My first shore tour was in the Pentagon on this staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. I was in Op-96, the Systems Analysis Division where we did cost trade-offs studies to help determine the most cost-effective solution. After 3 1/2 years in the puzzle palace, during which time I lived in the city of Washington D.C., I was transferred to of the PhibRon 8 Staff in the Norfolk Virginia area.  While there we made several deployments to the Caribbean.  The first deployment we made to the Mediterranean was highlighted by our evacuation of U.S. citizens from Cyprus in 1974.   In 1976 I was transferred to Charleston, South Carolina where I served as the military head of a small office of civilians that assisted in weapons systems support for the fleet forces in Charleston.  Next it was off to St. Paul Minnesota, no the Navy does not have any ships there, where I was the Production Chief of a small office in the defense contracting service.  We were tasked with overseeing all contracts for all the military services in a three state area.  It was quite educational for me to see a different side of the military bureaucracy.

In 1981 the Navy decided that I needed that have an overseas tour and so I was sent to Seoul, South Korea for one-year to work on the Staff of the Combined Forces Command.  The mission of CFC was to be prepared to fight the war with the North when it came.     Again this was very educational for me because I was in a command were the majority of the people, both U.S. and Korean, were Army.  It was interesting to see how differently the Army treats their personnel.

In the Fall 1982 I returned to the U.S. and had my final tour, again  with a Defense Contract Administration office, this time in San Bruno, California which is just south of San Francisco.  In June of 1983 I retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander after having served for 20 years.
